Our story
Touch A Life For His Kingdom is a Christian and community-based organization dedicated to transforming lives in Kawangware Slums, Nairobi, Kenya. Rooted in the teachings of Jesus Christ, we believe that every person is created in the image of God and deserves to be treated with dignity, compassion, and respect. Guided by this conviction, we have been working since our founding in 2022 to meet the pressing social, economic, and spiritual needs of the community.
Our purpose is to bring lasting, positive change to families living in Kawangware through evangelism, discipleship, empowerment, and humanitarian aid. We affirm that true wholeness in life cannot be attained apart from God, and therefore, as we serve practical needs, we also faithfully share the gospel of Christ.
With a team of dedicated volunteers and strong partnerships with local communities and organizations, we run diverse programs designed to uplift lives and foster sustainable development. These initiatives range from discipling new believers and conducting one-on-one street evangelism to supporting new mothers and empowering the community through sports and education.
Our vision is inspired by John 13:35: “By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another.” As followers of Christ, we are committed to demonstrating His love without bias, reaching out to the most vulnerable with both words of hope and tangible acts of service.

David and Vicky
Founders
David and Vicky have been serving as Christian mentors to youth across various platforms and organizations since 2015. Over the years, they have also facilitated several feeding programs and initiatives for street families in Nairobi’s Central Business District. Their passion lies in reaching unbelievers with the gospel and helping young people become firmly rooted in Christ.
As directors and co-laborers in ministry, David and Vicky play an active role in coordinating and facilitating the organization’s programs and overseeing daily activities at Touch A Life For His Kingdom. Their leadership is hands-on, deeply relational, and guided by their commitment to share Christ’s love in both word and action.
David and Vicky are deeply committed to seeing the gospel lived out in practical ways—feeding the hungry, mentoring the next generation, and offering hope to the broken. Their heartbeat is to see transformation in Kawangware as people encounter Christ’s love, embrace His mindset, and are empowered to live out their God-given purpose.
Currently, they are pursuing higher education—David in Transformational Church Leadership and Vicky in Counselling Psychology—equipping themselves to serve with excellence and impact. Their greatest desire is that God would use them in every capacity to demonstrate love and compassion to the people of Kawangware.
Their prayer is that through different community projects, the people of Kawangware will adopt the mindset of Christ, experience holistic transformation, and be empowered to accomplish their God-given purpose.
Dr. Hal Burchel
Founders
Hal is a retired physician from the USA. He and his first wife, Ruthan, first came to Africa in 1968. Thereafter they spent many years in mission hospitals in Zambia, Kenya and Tanzania, and were in Somalia for five weeks during the US occupation. They have four children, ten grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren. Hal retired from medicine in2017, and cared for his wife, whose health was declining. Ruthan went to heaven in June 2021, and, in the midst of his grieving, three months after her death, at the age of eighty-one, God called him back to Africa. One year after Ruthan’s passing, God miraculously brought Mary Ellen, a girl he’d dated fifty-eight years ago, back into his life. They fell in love and married in December 2022. She now is very involved in the ministry and a great support to him.
Hal says his vocation in medicine, but his calling is “soul winning”. He admits he was forty years old before he led his first convert to Jesus. Since then, he has prayed with over 9000 people, mostly Africans, to receive the Lord as Savior. It is the passion of his life. Mary Ellen and he are the US directors of Touch A Life for His Kingdom, and although they come to Africa only twice a year, they stay in close contact with David and Vicky by phone calls two to three times a week and frequent emails. They are responsible or raising most of the funds needed to support the ministry and keeping in contact with partners in the States.
Hal’s passion for evangelism and David and Vicky’s passion for discipleship dovetail beautifully and have resulted in an ever-expanding growth of new converts and intentional discipleship, which is producing mature Christians, who are then sharing the gospel with others. We are therefore at the point of multiplication, not simple addition. God is indeed” adding to the church daily those who are being saved. “We remain his hands to reach down to the underprivileged and the unsaved in Kawangware slum, those who have no hope, and to reach up to God, and through the cross of Christ bring the hopeless and the hope-giver together. We see the miracle of the new birth change these people dramatically, giving them hope and self-esteem, at the same time raising them out of poverty and a victim mentality.
What we do
Our PROGRAMS
At Touch A Life For His Kingdom, we reach out to the community in Kawangware through four key programs that address spiritual, emotional, and practical needs:
One-on-one street evangelism & Discipleship
We go out into the streets to share the gospel of Christ with those we meet. Individuals who respond and give their lives to Christ begin a discipleship journey with us. Evangelism is only the beginning — after the gospel is shared, we must walk with new believers in discipleship so they can be rooted in Christ. For ten weeks, we meet them weekly—either at their homes, workplaces, or within the community—to walk through discipleship lessons. It costs only Ksh 50 ($0.40) for one discipleship lesson, and each person goes through 10 lessons at a total of Ksh 500 (about $4). Upon completion, each receives their own personal Bible and encouragement to join a Bible-believing church where they can continue to grow in faith.
- Reach: ~180 people monthly
- Impact: ~100 people receive Christ.
~60 people complete discipleship lessons and receive Bibles each month
Cost: With $4, we can take one new believer through all 10 life-changing discipleship lessons after evangelism.
- With 12 USD, we can gift a new believer their first Bible.
.🌍 Evangelism + Discipleship = Lasting Transformation 🌍
Maternal Care Program
We support new mothers in Kawangware with babies aged 0 to 3 months. Many of these women work in informal jobs, lacking steady income during maternity. Often, they are forced to resume work just days after delivery, leaving their infants in the care of neighbors. To ease this burden, we:
- Provide essentials such as diapers, food supplies, maternity pads, baby clothing, and hygiene items
- Assist with house chores and offer emotional encouragement
- Share the word of God, extending love and hope
- Take new believing mothers through discipleship and gift them a Bible at the end of the program
Our goal is to enhance their well-being, restore dignity, and empower them to support others in their communities.
- Reach: ~20 mothers monthly
- Cost: With 50 USD, we can support one new mother with food, maternity care, and baby essentials.
School Sponsorship Program
Our sponsorship program helps to keep needy and bright students off the streets and in school where they grow in knowledge and advance towards their dreams. We have partnered with the parents of these children to ensure that the child receives adequate support as they pursue their education at different levels from primary school, high school and college.
Reach:~ 30 students
Cost: With 80 USD every month, we help to keep a child in school
Sports evangelism and discipleship
Through football, we mentor and disciple children and youth aged 7–18 years. In a community where many young people face challenges such as school dropouts, early pregnancies, substance abuse, and lack of guidance, we use sports as a positive alternative. Each week, we hold:
- Bible studies twice a week, followed by football training
- Shared meals during training sessions
- Provision of dignity kits for both boys and girls
- Parent meetings every three months, equipping families to nurture their children’s growth
This program not only develops talents but also instills discipline, hope, and a love for Christ.
- Reach: ~95 children and youth daily
- Cost: With 2 USD, we can support one child’s weekly meals and discipleship.
